February 2, 2015 - Finding Carter
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — Back in Nov we took we to Virginia Tech, where researchers are contrast football helmets and rating them on a five-star scale, judging how effective they are in preventing conduct injuries.
During WSAZ’s investigation, we were means to find out how a helmets used during a area high schools arrange and have new results.
We spent months digging by annals and register listings, anticipating out how helmets used during schools in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky rank.
But given a strange review aired, people were discerning to respond. Recently, we were means to obtain a list of helmets used during high schools opposite Kanawha County to see if they make a grade.
When it comes to helmet safety, Kanawha County ranks high, with many of a high schools regulating helmets given 4 and 5 stars by Virginia Tech researchers.
“Moving from a one-star to a four-star helmet reduces your concussion rate by 50 percent. There’s still a risk, though it reduces it in half,” Dr. Stefan Duma, Virginia Tech Biomedical Engineer said.
Riverside High School did have a one-star rated VSR-4 helmet in a inventory.
Riverside Athletic Director Ryan Carter says, “I guarantee your children are not personification in one-star helmets.”
Carter says those helmets, while on hand, are not being used by students.
“We indeed switched over to black helmets dual years ago. And when we went over there to take inventory, a one star helmets are indeed still purple. So, they haven’t been used in a final dual years,” Carter said.
The VSR-4 helmets during Riverside are during slightest 10 years old, definition they wouldn’t pass inspections and wouldn’t be protected in preventing concussions, Carter said.
Carter knows about concussions first-hand.
“I had a lot of concussions personification high propagandize football,” Carter said. “It’s a struggle. It really, it’s awful in a classroom. You can’t concentrate. I’m blissful Virginia Tech is holding a beginning to pull a study.”
Another chairman holding beginning is 17-year-old Kelsey Lantz, a high propagandize comparison from Clarksburg. By her sophomore year, she’d already suffered 6 vital conduct injuries.
Now Kelsey is pulling for changes to an already existent check that she says is too messy when it comes to who can transparent students to lapse to play and allows them to lapse too quickly.
“I consider that if we would have had something like this put in place whenever we was personification hit sports, that we competence have been means to forestall some of a things, some of a bad decisions that we made” Kelsey said.
Now Carter says, during Riverside, students are not authorised to lapse to a diversion if they’re suspected of pang a conduct injury. And they can usually lapse after if they get privileged by a doctor.
Carter also says he takes a Virginia Tech rankings really severely and a new helmets they’ve purchased have all be Xenith brand, many with five-star ratings.
